Australia\u2019s public hospitals are caught in a crippling bed-block crisis. In July, more than 1,600 patients across NSW who were medically fit for discharge remained in hospital, consuming over 58,000 bed-days due to a lack of access to aged care or NDIS support (ABC News).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This \u201cexit block\u201d directly contributes to emergency department bottlenecks. More than 31% of patients requiring admission spend over 8 hours in ED, worsening overcrowding and ambulance ramping (ABC). The AMA\u2019s 2025 Report Card shows a slight improvement in beds per older Australian, yet hospital capacity remains dangerously stretched (AMA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
